There are many shops that rent golf carts and scooters, and most of the hotels give the bicycles as complimentary gifts for staying at their establishment. People who ride the bikes and scooters do not need helmets to get around. It is a safe ride, even though the cobble streets can be a little bumpy. Besides all of the sightseeing tours where tourists can see all of the older architecture; there are also beach, river, and national park excursions that they can also spend their time on. Colonia has one main beach and the broadest river in the world. The river is called Rio de la Plata and it is what people use to ferry over from Buenos Aires. Colonia is an unspoiled town just ripe for the pickings. People will not have to worry about near as many tourists as they would in the bigger city of Buenos Aires. This leaves them time to find all of the entertainment they can out of the quaint town.
Most people who visit Colonia believe that they have walked into a fairytale story of cobble stone streets and leprechauns. The residents of Colonia dress up in old colonial style clothes in most of the business establishments. The beaches look more like a seashore township in Uruguay than a small city. Most of the older fairytale like buildings will be seen with bougainvilleas of purple and pink colors growing out from the laterals of the buildings. While walking through the streets in the central part of the city tourists can hear faint sounds of music coming from an uncharted place. Some people may believe that they are hearing the music of the spheres. People who visit Colonia will most likely only spend less than $100 for a one day stay in a hotel, food, and entertainment. You won't find any high end entertainment opportunies as in Las Vegas, however. It may be the most affordable vacation they have ever had. The beach in Colonia is called Playa Ferranda. It is a relaxing beach where tourists can rent a kayak or a sail boat and sail around the waters of the bay. The sand is strikingly soft and comfortable to walk on. The weather in Colonia is mostly wonderful all year round with some heavy rain and wind at times.
Tourists also love to ride around the rural streets on their scooters and bikes. Some of the rural streets, such as Parque Ferrando can be found on the outside of the town. These streets are very windy and can take tourists all around the town to see the main historical landmarks. The main landmarks to take notice of are the oldest church in the city, an old bull ring ruin, a lighthouse, an old convent, and many older houses that were built back in the 1800s.
